In the Court of Special Needs

Biology v. Heartology

Motion for Emotional Typing Test Order

Soha

Soha is fifty-six, but mentally five or six. Soha's mother is not her biological mother, but she is the mother who raised her, ties her shoelaces, buttons her clothes, and cooks her favorite food. Her biological sister, who had never maintained a close relationship, suddenly filed for guardianship after their father passed away, driven by interests regarding the inheritance.

Soha's mother fought fiercely to be appointed guardian, terrified that Soha would be taken from her. In court, the decisive moment came when the judge invited Soha to the stand to hear her directly.

'Where do you want to be, Soha?' the judge asked gently.

'With Mom,' she answered immediately.

The judge tested the connection further: 'And if you couldn't be with Mom, where would you want to be?'

Everyone waited in tense silence. Would she name her sister?

In simple innocence that revealed the whole truth, Soha replied: 'At school.'

That answer was in no script. It proved Soha did not view her sister as an option, preferring school over the relative seeking custody. Simple truth triumphed over legal maneuvering, and the judge granted guardianship to Soha's mother, allowing them to return home together.
